TELL YOUR OWN STORY WITH WRITOPIA LAB@TY: writing INTENSIVE
Writopia Lab @TY is a new two-week intensive providing teens the opportunity to hone writing skills and connect via their literary passions in a camp setting.
Dates: July 29-August 13, 2019
For: Current 9th-11th Graders
Writopia Lab: National Community of Young Writers & Thinkers
TY is proud to continue our partnership with Writopia Lab, a national youth, teen, and young adult program that fosters literacy and critical thinking through creative writing. Through Writopia Lab’s innovative workshop method, teens are empowered as peer leaders as they gain skills in writing, editing, analysis, and effective communication.
Workshops: Student-Centered & Author-Led
Under the tutelage of established authors, writers will brainstorm, write, and polish their own original short story, memoir, play, and/or poetry upon learning core elements of plot, key literary tools, and mechanics of a coherent story. The workshops allow a community of teen writers to find each other and connect via their literary passions. The peer-leadership model blends perfectly with TY’s own leadership development methodology.
College Essay/Memoir Opportunity
During this two-week module, teens may opt to participate in the college essay/memoir Minor. If so, they will be guided through the process of identifying unique and meaningful personal stories and allowed the space to tell those stories in their own authentic voices. Writers will leave camp with a completed college essay or memoir in hand, and perhaps more importantly, a deepened confidence in their own writing talents.
Tel Yehudah provides a one-of-a-kind Jewish environment, where teens interact with others from Jewish communities in the U.S., Israel and around the world. In addition to all the creative offerings of Writopia@TY, the “best of camp” at TY includes the opportunity to partake in sports, arts and Israel education programs. Each week culminates in Shabbat, amidst the natural, serene setting of Tel Yehudah and is followed by a wild Israeli dance party.
Teens participating in the two-week Writopia Lab @TY Intensive will:
- Complete a polished piece of fiction writing.
- Grasp knowledge of core plot elements and key literary tools.
- Perfect the ability to construct a story.
- Gain confidence in conveying a message to an audience.
- Become familiar with Jewish texts.
- Come to understand and better express their own identity.
- Be provided the opportunity to participate in a college essay/memoir elective.
